How to Calculate Your Ex-Date

Under India's T+1 (trade plus one) settlement, which has applied since January 2023:

Ex-date = Record date − 1 trading day

Practical examples for May 2026:

Record Date Ex-Date Note
May 2 (Saturday) April 30 (Thursday) Skip the weekend; May 1 is a holiday (Maharashtra Day)
May 5 (Tuesday) May 2 (Saturday — not a trading day) → April 30 April 30 is the last trading day before May 5
May 8 (Friday) May 7 (Thursday) Standard T+1
May 12 (Monday) May 9 (Friday)
May 15 (Thursday) May 14 (Wednesday)

To be eligible for a dividend, you must hold the shares at the close of the ex-date. Shares bought on or after the ex-date do not carry the dividend.

Notable Dividends This Week (Late April)

Several significant dividends have record dates in the last week of April — relevant for investors deciding whether to buy before ex-date.

Record Date Company Dividend
Apr 22 Sanofi India Ltd ₹48.00 final
Apr 23 Schaeffler India Ltd ₹35.00 final
Apr 24 Reliance Industries TBA — board meets Apr 24
Apr 30 Vesuvius India Ltd ₹1.50
Apr 30 Stovec Industries Ltd ₹12.00

Reliance Industries' board meets April 24 alongside Q4 results — the dividend recommendation (if any) will be announced then.

Why May Dividends Are Still Being Added

Q4 FY26 earnings season runs through April and May. Most companies announce their annual final dividend at the same board meeting that approves Q4 results. As of April 18, roughly 30% of Nifty 50 companies have reported. As the remaining companies report in the last two weeks of April and throughout May, expect:

  • Late April: Infosys (Apr 23), Reliance (Apr 24), Tech Mahindra (Apr 22), HUL (Apr 30), UltraTech Cement (Apr 27) — all may announce dividend recommendations alongside results
  • May: Mid-and-small-cap results + all AGM-season final dividends

Dividend Tax Reminder

Both interim and final dividends are taxed as income in India at your applicable slab rate:

  • TDS of 10% is deducted on dividends exceeding ₹5,000 from a single company per financial year
  • TDS is deductible as credit when filing your ITR
  • Special dividends (one-time payouts) are taxed identically — do not include them in yield calculations for future years

How Record Dates Work

  1. Company board declares dividend and sets a record date
  2. SEBI regulations: dividend must be paid within 30 days of declaration
  3. BSE/NSE announce the ex-date (= record date − 1 trading day under T+1)
  4. On the ex-date, the stock typically drops by approximately the dividend amount (market prices in the upcoming payout)
  5. All shareholders on the register as of the record date receive the dividend, regardless of whether they sold on the ex-date
